Mechanical contractor John W. Danforth is expanding again by acquiring a City of Tonawanda property from a medical supplies company to gain more metal fabrication and warehouse space.

The Tonawanda-based company paid $1.785 million to buy the 62,598-square-foot facility at 500 Fillmore Ave. from Warrenville, Ill.-based Patterson Medical Supply Inc., parent of the former Medco Supply Co. The single-story building was constructed in 1987 on 5 acres.

“This acquisition will support the company’s current and forecasted growth initiatives, as the facility will have offices, pipe and sheet metal fabrication, as well as warehouse space,” the company said in an emailed statement. Danforth has facilities across the Northeast.

Medco, which is not related to the national pharmacy benefits management company, is a leading national distributor of sports medicine, first aid and medical supplies. It was acquired in 2004 by Patterson Dental, now Patterson Medical.

Patterson consolidated its subsidiary’s logistics functions, so it no longer needs the warehouse, and is moving its offices to 25 Northpointe Parkway in Amherst.

“The building was sold very quickly, which is an indication of the continued strength of the industrial market,” said David Schiller of Pyramid Brokerage Co., who handled the transaction with colleague Paul Boser.
